ProfessorPhilipp Adelhelm is a materials scientist and received his education at the University of Stuttgart and the Max-Planck-Institute for Metals Research. He received his PhD in physical chemistry 2007 (Max-Planck-Institute of Colloids and Interfaces, Potsdam, Germany) and worked as a postdoc at the Debye Institute of Nanomaterials Science at Utrecht University, The Netherlands. In 2009, he joined the group of Jürgen Janek at Giessen University for his habilitation. Since April 2015, he is full professor at the Institute for Technical Chemistry and Environmental Chemistry at the Friedrich-Schiller-University Jena. He is also part of the newly established Jena Center for Energy and Environmental Chemistry (CEEC Jena) that was inaugurated in fall 2015. During the last years, his research interests were on carbon materials, hydrogen storage and next-generation battery systems – with the focus on sodium based systems.

Vice PresidentDr. Barnett is a Vice President at TIAX LLC. His areas of specialization are battery technologies, battery materials and battery safety. He received his B.Sc. degree in Chemistry from McGill University and his Ph.D. degree in Electrochemistry from the University of Ottawa (with B.E Conway). He has participated in assessments of causes of safety incidents involving Li-ion batteries in computers, mobile phones and more recently in the Dreamliner investigation. - Development of a proprietary high-energy, high-power cathode material for lithium-ion batteries, with advantages in safety, cost and performance in automotive as well as portable applications and the highest in-cell energy density possible in lithium-ion cells.
- Development of novel technologies to assure enhanced safety of lithium-ion cells and batteries, including by early detection of incipient faults in lithium-ion cells.

ProfessorFrançois Béguin is Professor in Poznan University of Technology, where he leads a research group on energy storage systems (supercapacitors, hydrogen storage and lithium-ion batteries). He is especially interested by applications of carbon materials to these systems, and he develops new processes to control the porosity and surface functionality of carbons. In the case of supercapacitors, his recent activities are dedicated to asymmetric and hybrid capacitors and to environment friendly systems. In 2013, he edited a book entitled “Supercapacitors: materials, systems and applications”. From 2006 to 2012, he was appointed in the French Agency for Research (ANR) as director of programs on Fuel Cells and Energy Storage Systems. His works are cited in more than 12500 papers; his H index is 53.

ProfessorDr. Peter Birke obtained his PhD in materials science (ion conducting ceramics) from the University of Kiel in 1997. In 1998, he joined the Fraunhofer-Institute for Silicon Technology, Itzehoe, Germany, to work on the development of proprietary Li-Ion laminated cell with a functional ceramic separator and co-founded two spin-offs to put this technology into production. After being involved in the development and production of pouch type laminated (PoLiFlex) Li-Ion cells at Varta for five years, Dr. Birke joined Continental AG in Berlin in 2005, first as a project leader in energy-storage systems. He became senior technical expert in battery technology and team Leader in cell technology, and in 2010 was appointed head of battery module and electromechanics. Dr. Birke has 17 years of experience in research, development, and production of energy-storage systems with a focus on Li-Ion technology. Since 2015 he is full professor at the University of Stuttgart covering the field of Electrical Energy Storage Systems.

ProfessorProf. Elzbieta Frackowiak (FRSC) works in the Institute of Chemistry and Technical Electrochemistry at the Poznan University of Technology, Poland. Her research field is energy storage and conversion with special emphasis on electrochemical capacitors, lithium-ion batteries, fuel cells and hydrogen electrosorption in carbon materials. She is particularly interested in electrode materials from activated carbons, carbon nanotubes, carbons enriched with heteroatoms (nitrogen, oxygen), graphene materials, conducting polymers and composites. From 2009-2014, she served as Chair of the Electrochemical Energy Conversion and Storage Division in the International Society of Electrochemistry. He was editor of Wiley’s Handbook of Fuel Cells and has published 110 refereed articles (h index 55, 17000 citations), 15 book chapters, and 37 patent applications/patents. He is a Fellow of the Electrochemical Society and received the 2012 Grove Medal for fuel cell research.

Director of Materials Research Laboratory (LaMa), Scientific DirectorJürgen Janek is professor for Physical Chemistry at Justus-Liebig University in Giessen (Germany) and scientific director of BELLA (Batteries and Electrochemistry Laboratory), a joint lab of BASF SE and KIT in Karlsruhe/Germany. He received his doctoral degree (Dr. rer. nat.) in Chemistry from University of Hannover, mentored by Hermann Schmalzried and Alan B. Lidiard in the field of physical chemistry of solids. He was visiting professor at Seoul National University, Tohoku University/Sendai and Université d´Aix-Marseille. His research in physical chemistry of solids and electrochemistry spans a wide range from fundamental transport studies in mixed conductors, electrode kinetics and interface phenomena to plasma electrochemistry and in situ studies in electrochemical cells. Current key interests include new materials and their reactions in lithium solid state batteries, lithium- and sodium-based next generation batteries and the defect chemistry of porous and nanostructured oxides. Jürgen Janek holds several patents and is author of about 200 peer-reviewed papers in a wide range of journals.

Today his research is mainly focused on electrolytes for Li-ion and next generation batteries (Li-S, Na-ion) and he runs a group of 12 PhD students and postdocs. He also leads the theory platform of Alistore-ERI and his main interest is indeed to combine the development of better applied performance with an increased understanding of new materials at an atomic scale, often via combining macroscopic property assessments with advanced computational methods. He is a PI within the Swedish Electric and Hybrid Vehicle Centre (SHC) and the Director of Chalmers’ Applied Physics Master Programme.

Chief Scientific OfficerDr. Dee Strand is CSO at Wildcat Discovery Technologies, a materials discovery company focused on battery materials and other clean energy applications. Dr. Strand has over twenty years of experience in materials research, development, and commercialization, primarily in the areas of energy storage and electronic applications. Prior to joining Wildcat in 2013, Dr. Strand served as a Research Fellow at Dow Chemical, where she was the technical lead in Dow Energy Materials, as well as the Principal Investigator on external research programs with universities and national labs on battery materials. Dr. Strand completed her Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry at the University of Wisconsin-Madison under the supervision of Professor John Schrag. Her Ph.D. research focused on rheology and birefringence of polymeric solutions. Dr. Strand also holds a Master of Science degree in Chemistry from the California Institute of Technology and a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from North Dakota State University.

Deputy Head of Competence Center Emerging TechnologiesDr. Axel Thielmann is Deputy Head of the Competence Center "Emerging Technologies" at the Fraunhofer Institute for Systems and Innovation Research (Fraunhofer ISI). His research areas focus on scientific, technological developments in emerging technologies such as nanotechnology, advanced materials, production technologies with focus on energy technologies. He performs analyses on their market potentials, technical, socio-economic and environmental impacts and dynamics, regulatory frame conditions and implications for strategic planning and technology policy. He represents the Fraunhofer ISI in the Fraunhofer Nanotechnology Alliance and the Fraunhofer Battery Alliance. Since 2010 Dr. Thielmann is coordinating and conducting a Roadmapping and Monitoring process on Lithium-Ion Batteries for electric mobility and stationary energy storage on behalf of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF).

Senior Product ManagerUwe Wiedemann studied Mechatronics at the University of Aalen, Germany and the University of Teesside, GB. He received a PhD degree from the University of Ulm for the investigation of NiMH ageing mechanism in HEVs. After working in research and development departments at Daimler AG and Robert Bosch GmbH, he joined AVL List’s Global Battery Competence Team in 2009. His current position is Senior Product Manager.

General ManagerDr. Hartung Wilstermann studied electrical engineering at the Karlsruhe University of Technology (now part of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology). Upon completing his studies in 1995, he began his career at Daimler AG, where he obtained his doctorate in 1998 based on his research on ignition systems with integrated ion current measurement. Dr. Wilstermann joined the Daimler AG exchange group in 1999 and subsequently held various positions in the field of drive electronics and on-board diagnostics. As Senior Manager he was responsible for “Gasoline system drive electronics” and was also the Project Manager of the start/stop systems for Mercedes-Benz cars between 2005 and 2009. He subsequently took over the management of the “Hybrid system integration & E/E hardware” area. Dr. Wilstermann has been General Manager of Deutsche ACCUmotive GmbH & Co. KG in Kirchheim u. Teck/Nabern, Germany since March 2010, where he is responsible for development and program management of high voltage battery systems for automotive purpose.

He has been active in the field of battery science and technology for more than 20 years. For his achievements, he was awarded with the Research and Technology Awards of the Electrochemical Society (ECS) and the International Battery Materials Association (IBA), respectively, and with the Carl Wagner Memorial Award of the ECS. He is a Fellow of the ECS and the International Society of Electrochemistry (ISE).
Currently, he is the chairman of the advisory board of the Batterieforum of the BMBF (Germany Ministry of Education and Research) and a member of the German National Platform E-Mobility (NPE).

She started her career in battery components industry in 1995 and today her expertise in technology and markets covers lithium battery supply chain from lithium extractions to future energy storage devices. Marina has inventions in lithium-ion battery materials widely used commercially, including the cathode technology that has become the industry standard and is used in a vast majority of consumer electronics devices. Today, her mission is to implement FMC’s new strategic inventions through industry and academia collaborations to enable improved performances in Li-ion battery and high energy density storage devices.

General ManagerDr. Yang has over 14 years of experience in Li-Ion battery development for EV applications. While at ITRI, he lead a team of 30 people dedicated to developing Li-ion batteries for LEV and HEV applications as well as the LEV promotion project in Taiwan, two projects that were supported by the Taiwanese government. He is now General Manager at TD HiTech Energy, Inc., a company that develops energy-storage systems and provides Li-Ion battery pack systems for E-Bike and E-scooter application markets, and President of EnergyBus e.V.

Sr. Research ScientistDr. Ke Zhang is a Sr. Research Scientist at Huntsman Performance Products, where she focuses on the development of low cost, high performance components for lithium ion battery electrolytes. Dr. Zhang has over ten years of experience in the development and commercialization of specialty chemicals for advanced applications including batteries, catalysts, and composites. Dr. Zhang completed a Ph.D. in Chemistry at Kent State University, after which she was a postdoctoral fellow and lab manager at Kent State. Dr. Zhang also holds a Bachelor and Master of degree in Applied Chemistry from Shanghai Jiao Tong University.
