Department Head, Electrochemical Energy StorageAnthony K. Burrell received a Ph.D. in chemistry in 1990 from the University of Auckland, New Zealand. He was a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Texas, Austin (1991-1992) before joining Los Alamos National Laboratory as a Directors Fellow in 1992. He then moved to the Chemistry Department at Massey University, New Zealand and 1994 and was awarded the Chair of Synthetic Chemistry in 1998. He received his doctoral degree (Dr. rer. nat.) in Chemistry from University of Hannover, mentored by Hermann Schmalzried and Alan B. Lidiard in the field of physical chemistry of solids. He was visiting professor at Seoul National University, Tohoku University/Sendai and Université d´Aix-Marseille. His research in physical chemistry of solids and electrochemistry spans a wide range from fundamental transport studies in mixed conductors, electrode kinetics and interface phenomena to plasma electrochemistry and in situ studies in electrochemical cells. Current key interests include new materials and their reactions in lithium solid state batteries, lithium- and sodium-based next generation batteries and the defect chemistry of porous and nanostructured oxides. Jürgen Janek holds several patents and is author of about 200 peer-reviewed papers in a wide range of journals.

Head of E-MobilityDr. Jan Fritz Rettberg received a doctor’s degree in technology and innovation management at TU Dortmund University. ProfessorDr. Peter Birke obtained his PhD in materials science (ion conducting ceramics) from the University of Kiel in 1997. Research AssistantJan Singer is a Research Assistant in the field of Electrical Energy Storage Systems with focus on Battery Management Systems, especially ASIL C demand, modular concepts and detecting of aging processes such as Lithium plating. He started his professional career in 2006 as mechatronic technician at Harman/Becker Automotive Systems. In 2012 he received his Bachelor of Engineering from University of Applied Sciences Ulm in Energy Systems. Afterwards he joined University of Stuttgart and was graduated as Master of Science in Sustainable Electrical Power Supply in 2015. Since September 2015 he is a Research Assistant at Institute of Photovoltaics, Department for Electrical Energy Storage Systems.

Chief Scientific OfficerDr. Dee Strand is CSO at Wildcat Discovery Technologies, a materials discovery company focused on battery materials and other clean energy applications. Dr. Strand has over twenty years of experience in materials research, development, and commercialization, primarily in the areas of energy storage and electronic applications. Prior to joining Wildcat in 2013, Dr. Strand served as a Research Fellow at Dow Chemical, where she was the technical lead in Dow Energy Materials, as well as the Principal Investigator on external research programs with universities and national labs on battery materials. Dr. Strand completed her Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry at the University of Wisconsin-Madison under the supervision of Professor John Schrag. Her Ph.D. research focused on rheology and birefringence of polymeric solutions. Dr. Strand also holds a Master of Science degree in Chemistry from the California Institute of Technology and a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from North Dakota State University.

Dr. Zhang completed a Ph.D. in Chemistry at Kent State University, after which she was a postdoctoral fellow and lab manager at Kent State. Dr. Zhang also holds a Bachelor and Master of degree in Applied Chemistry from Shanghai Jiao Tong University.

Since 2011, he is also a Principal Investigator of the System Group at the Helmholtz-Institute Ulm for Electrochemical Energy Storage (HIU). Michael A. Danzer received the Dipl.-Ing. and Dr.-Ing. (Ph.D.) degrees both in electrical engineering from Ulm University, in 2003 and 2009, respectively. From 2009 to 2010, he was with A123 Systems, Inc., Boston, MA, USA, working as a research scientist and validation engineer.

Earlier in his career he worked for SGL Group – The Carbon Company, starting up their research activities related with Li-ion batteries. He received his PhD degree in Chemistry from Graz University of Technology (Austria).
