Dr. Egbert Figgemeier was born and raised in Paderborn, Germany. He studied chemistry at the University of Paderborn. He earned a PhD in Physical Chemistry in 1998 at the University of Paderborn on Lyotropic Liquid Crystals. He conducted post-doc studies at Dublin City University, Dublin (Electrochemistry of Self-Assembled Monolayers) and the University of Basel, Switzerland (Electrochemistry of Self-Assembled Monolayers). From 2007 to 2012 he worked for Bayer Technology Services GmbH, Germany in the following areas: 1. Lab head electrochemistry and corrosion, 2. Project leader CNT for fuel cells, 3. Business developing CNT for Li-ion batteries, 4. Responsible IP-strategy for process technology. Since February 2012 he has been part of 3M Germany, Neuss as a senior Application Development Specialist, Electronics Market Materials Division, Battery Materials.

Christoph Fehrenbacher is the Director of European Application Engineering at A123 Systems where he focuses on new business development and engineering support for automotive customers. Prior to joining A123 in 2010, he spent 10 years at BEHR where he held several positions in advanced engineering and innovation management including 4 years as a project manager for Lithium-Ion system development. Earlier in his career, he worked in energy storage development at the German Aerospace Center. Mr. Fehrenbacher holds a degree in aerospace engineering from the University of Stuttgart.

Mr. Kessen works for A123 Systems where he focuses on market strategy. Prior to joining A123 in 2009, he spent 11 years at Bosch, which included holding leadership positions in program management, sales, and strategic marketing for automotive control software. In 2007, he was appointed General Manager of Bosch’s US business unit focused on software development tools. Earlier in his career Jeff worked in chassis component development at Delphi. Jeff holds a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from GMI Engineering and Management Institute and an M.B.A. from the University of Michigan.

Mr. Matthé leads the development of the Li-Ion battery system for GM’s upcoming extended-range EV, the Chevrolet Volt. He began his work in the EFLEX concept team in 2006 and moved to the GM Technical Center in Warren in 2007. Up to then he was responsible for system design of advanced fuel cell propulsion systems and batteries.

President of Advanced Automotive Batteries and founder of Total Battery Consulting, Inc., Dr. Anderman has led the development and commercialization of high-power Ni-Cd batteries, Li-Ion batteries, and ultracapacitors and spent the last ten years conducting assessments of energy-storage technologies for advanced vehicles, publishing Advanced Automotive Battery Industry Reports and chairing the AABC.

Christophe has built up considerable expertise in the area of battery market. He joined AVICENNE 18 years ago and Spend 3 years in Japan making analysis on the Electronic, Mobile & Japanese battery market. Christophe gained large experience in marketing, strategy analysis, technology and financial studies for the battery and power management fields. He developed the Battery market analysis for AVICENNE which counts more than 170 customers worldwide. Christophe published several annual surveys like “The rechargeable battery market 2011-2020”. He is also the founder & chairman of Batteries congress in France since 1999. He is now Director of AVICENNE ENERGY.

Dr. Wiedemann studied Mechatronics at the University of Aalen, Germany and the University of Teesside, GB. During his Ph.D. thesis at the University of Ulm, he investigated ageing mechanisms for NiMH cells for HEVs. Since 2003, he has been involved in battery management systems and works with electrochemical storage systems. After working in research and development departments at Daimler AG and Robert Bosch GmbH, he joined AVL List GmbH as Product Manager for Battery Systems in 2009.

Didier Marginèdes graduated from « Ecole Supérieure d’Electricité » in 1978, he has a Master of Sciences from Berkeley University (USA) obtained in 1979 and an Executive MBA from INSEAD (1989). After a first experience within Aerospatiale, he joined Schlumberger (81-86) to lead the development of signal processing for logging tools. He then worked for Air Liquide (86-95) in charge of the development of energy-related businesses and of strategic marketing. In 1995, he joined Bolloré as R&D Director where he managed the development strategy including competitive analysis and new products development. In 2001, Didier Marginedes added the function of General Manager of a new subsidy of Bolloré group: Batscap whose objectives are the development and sales of energy storage products such as batteries and supercapacitors. These products are mainly dedicated to clean energy transportation markets such as Electric Vehicle (Bluecar), electric bus (microbus), hybrid vehicles and clean tram system with energy recovery.

Dr. Spotnitz is a leading developer of mathematical models that simulate battery operation. Dr. Spotnitz, who previously held several senior technical positions in materials and battery development, founded Battery Design in 1999 to provide consulting and develop custom software for battery developers and users. He is a well-known speaker on various aspects of battery engineering.

Dr. Daniel H. Doughty has been involved with battery R&D, testing and evaluation since 1992. During his 34 year career in science and technology, he spent 27 years at Sandia National Laboratories, the last 14 years of which he managed the battery R&D group that was responsible for battery safety and abuse tolerance testing. After leaving Sandia in Dec. 2006, he spent over two years as Vice President for Product Safety for SION Power Corp., a company in Tucson, Arizona focused on commercializing Li-Sulfur rechargeable batteries. Dr. Doughty is President and founder of Battery Safety Consulting Inc., a company dedicated to providing expert and independent consulting services for a wide range of battery safety issues. He was the chair of the Society of Automotive Engineers Committee which revised and updated the SAE Recommend Test Procedure J2464, “Electric and Hybrid Electric Vehicle Rechargeable Energy Storage System (RESS) Safety and Abuse Testing”, published November, 2009. He is an active participant in other SAE and UL battery safety committees, has been an invited speaker at international conferences, and has extensive experience in lithium batteries, as well as other battery electrochemistries.

Dr. Arno Perner is Head of Concepts and Cell Technology in R&D battery for all electric vehicle applications at BMW. He joined BMW in 2009 and was first responsible for the EV cell of SBLiMotive for the Mega City Vehicle (MCV). From 2011 to 2012 he was Head of Component Lead engineering and Validation in R&D battery at BMW. He has over 10years experience in Li-Ion battery technology and from 2001 to 2009 held several managing positions at VARTA in Li-Ion battery development. Dr. Perner possesses deep know-how in cell and pack development for PHEV and EV. He has received his Ph.D. degree in electrochemistry from ZSW in Ulm and has a bachelor degree in business administration.

Jenalle Brewer joined Calgon Carbon Corporation in 2012 as Marketing Manager for Specialty Products. Prior to joining Calgon Carbon, Jenalle spent five years at PPG Industries where she held a variety of positions in engineering, research and development, manufacturing and purchasing. Jenalle holds a B.S. in chemical and biomolecular engineering from the University of Notre Dame and an MBA from the University of Pittsburgh’s Katz School of Business.

Dr. Christian Brünig joined the R&D department for battery materials of Süd-Chemie, which has become part of the Clariant group, in January 2011 as a project manager and research scientist. He is in charge of the R&D activities which deal with high volt (5 V) cathode materials of Clariant. Within the scope of these projects Mr. Brünig is responsible for the synthesis and electrochemical testing of high volt compounds for lithium ion batteries. His educational background is in inorganic chemistry. He took his doctoral degree in “Chemical vapor synthesis of lithium ion conducting oxides” at the University of Hannover in 2010.

Dr. Shrisudersan Jayaraman is a Senior Research Scientist at Corning Incorporated. He received Bachelor’s Degree in Chemical & Electrochemical Engineering from the Central Electrochemical Research Institute, India and PhD in Chemical Engineering from Iowa State University. He was a Post-Doctoral researcher at the University of California at Santa Barbara prior to joining Corning. He works on fundamental and applied electrochemistry research at Corning.

Mr. Jeckel studied mechanical engineering at the Technical University of Stuttgart. He joined Daimler-Benz in 1988 work in the fields of air-conditioning and powertrain cooling. Since then he has held different managing positions in “Fuel Cell System Cooling”, “Hybrid Technologies” (electrical AC compressor, battery cooling) and “HV battery development for M-class hybrid”. Since September 2008 he has become responsible for the integration of HV-components in hybrid- and plug-in vehicles.

Dr. Lamm studied mechanical and chemical engineering at the Rhine-Westphalia Technical University (RWTH), Aachen. He obtained his PhD from the Jülich GmbH research center, and joined Daimler AG (former Daimler-Ben) in1995. Since then he has worked in different positions as senior manager for “Fuel Cell Stack and System Technology”, “Energy Storages” (Hydrogen tank, High-Voltage-Batteries) and “Fuel Cell Drivetrain”. In April 2009 Dr. Lamm became member of the board of German ACCUmotive at Nabern, and has been responsible for the development of Li-Ion batteries (Hybrid, EV, Plug-in). In December 2010 Dr. Lamm took over a new department at Daimler AG: “Characterization of HV Battery Systems“. He is member of the AG2 in the National Platform Electro Mobility in Germany.

Dr. Jörg Wind studied physics at the Technical University of Munich (TUM). After doing his Ph.D. in the field of semiconductor physics and sensor technology at the TUM in 1992, he started working in the field of fuel cells and hydrogen. As a project manager, he was responsible for material development for high-temperature fuel cells and exhaust after-treatment at DASA and DaimlerChrysler from 1992 until 1998. From 1998 until 2002, he was responsible for PEM stack development at DaimlerChrysler. Since 2002, he is responsible for strategic energy projects, comprising projects in the field of fuel cell vehicles and battery electric vehicles (including energy systems analyses and WTW-analyses).

Dr. Lawrence Alger is a Principal Engineer in the EV/HV Engineering department at DENSO International Europe. He joined DENSO nine years ago, initially in the Engine Management Systems Department in the UK. Now based at the Aachen Engineering Centre in Germany, Dr. Alger is responsible for all battery related activities in the EV/HV Engineering group and, working with colleagues in Japan, is developing DENSO’s next generation Lithium-ion Battery Management System (BMS). Before joining DENSO Dr. Alger received a first class degree in Mechanical and Aeronautical Engineering from The University of Brighton and a PhD from The University of Nottingham.

Prof. Yury Gogotsi is Distinguished University Professor and Trustee Chair of Materials Science and Engineering at Drexel University. He also serves as Director of the A.J. Drexel Nanotechnology Institute. His Ph.D. is in Physical Chemistry from Kiev Polytechnic and D.Sc. in Materials Engineering from Ukrainian Academy of Sciences. His research group works on nanostructured carbons and other nanomaterials. He has co-authored more than 300 journal papers and obtained more than 40 patents. He is a Fellow of AAAS, MRS, ECS and ACerS and a member of the World Academy of Ceramics.

Patrick Gagnol has been working for eight years at EDF electromobility division. He has been involved in several eMobility projects with Toyota at Strasbourg for testing the Prius plug in hybrid, SAVE with Renault and CROME, of which he is the French project leader, that enable electric cars to charge either in Germany or in France. Patrick Gagnol has been handling operational partnership between EDF and all major French car manufacturers, and has a complete and comprehensive understanding of electromobility. Previously, Patrick Gagnol was the head of the EDF R&D’s lab and research team on materials and energy storage (batteries and fuel cells) for transportation and stationary applications from 1996 to 2000. Then, He became project manager from 2001 to 2005 for the development of electric urban transportation as the electrically ground-fed tramway of Bordeaux in France.

Sergey Ulyakhin was born in 1979 in Neftekamsk, Russia. He obtained his MSc in Physics from the Moscow State University (2003), majoring in Polymer and Crystal Physics, and his PhD in Physics (2006) from the Moscow State University. He worked as an R&D project manager at LG Moscow Technology Center in from 2006 to 2011. He is Project Director of the asymmetric lead-acid supercapacitor development project at Elton since 2011.

Allan Cooper is European Project Coordinator for the ALABC. He graduated from the University of Cambridge in 1961. He retired from the lead industry in 1991 and became an independent consultant. In this capacity he has worked closely with the ALABC and with the International Lead Association in the UK. In 2008 he was awarded the International Lead Medal for exceptional contributions to the lead industry in the areas of lead metallurgy, production technology, and lead-acid battery development, particularly in the in the field of electric and hybrid electric vehicles.

Luca Brisotto joined Exide Technologies Product Development in 2001, after having studied Chemical Engineering at Polytechnic of Milan. He has since worked as Key Account / Application Engineer for several Car Manufacturers. In 2005 he started working on the development of the first generation MHF batteries for Stop&Start vehicles. Since 2008 he has been following the development of a new generation of MHF/EFB batteries mainly focusing on improved charge acceptance properties and overall performances to match the Car Manufacturers’ challenging requirements. Since 2012 he has been responsible for Exide OE Application Engineering / Project Management European team.

Dr. Yangxing Li has significant research and development experience in lithium chemical and energy technologies for over eighteen years. He started high-performance cathode material synthesis by controlled-crystallization and spray drying methods since 1995 in Tsinghua University and continued his research in Rutgers University and North Carolina State University, later he joined FMC in 2006. Dr. Li has worked as principal investigator/lead scientist for various projects both in China and USA, such as Basic Energy Science, Battery for Advanced Transportation Technology, National Natural Science Founding and among others. Dr. Li obtained both bachelor and Ph.D. degrees in Chemical Engineering in 1995 and 1999 from Tsinghua University and received several awards in both China and USA.

Dr. Karden is Technical Expert for Battery & Energy Storage Technology at Ford's Corporate Research and Advanced Engineering Centre in Aachen, Germany. Since he joined Ford, he was responsible for numerous projects in the fields of powertrain electrification, battery modeling and monitoring, and storage technology assessment, with a main focus on micro-hybridization in 14V systems.

Dr. Matthias Vetter is an Electrical Engineer with 13 years of experience at the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems (ISE). His various areas of work include autonomous systems and mini-grids, decentralized grid-connected PV battery systems, development of battery systems for stationary and automotive applications. Since 2011 he has been head of ISE’s “PV off-grid solutions and battery system technology” department. Dr. Vetter wrote his PhD thesis on modeling and development of control strategies for fuel cell systems.

Dr. Ilja Pawel is currently Technical Sales Manager with Gildemeister energy solutions. Before joining Gildemeister, Dr. Pawel worked as Product development engineer and project manager in several companies in the Renewable Energies sector. Additionally, he gathered experience while working as a consultant in the automotive industry. Dr. Pawel holds a degree in Industrial Engineering and Management and a PhD in power electronics devices, both from Technical University Ilmenau, Germany.

Ken Rudisuela has nearly three decades of experience in the advanced battery and ultracapacitor markets and has been involved in all areas of research and development, product development and design, manufacturing, and commercialization. As chief technology officer, Ken leads the engineering, research and development teams at Ioxus. Prior to joining Ioxus, Ken was with Moli Energy in Canada, Ashurst Technologies in Ukraine, Arcotronics in Italy and LTC/GAIA in Germany. Ken co-founded Uncap LLC in California and LaCima Corporation in Vancouver, both ultracapacitor develop companies. Ken earned his Bachelor of Applied Science degree from the University of Waterloo.

Atsushi Shirai is an Assistant Manager at JM Energy Corporation engaged in the research and development of lithium ion capacitors (LIC). He received his Master’s degree in Engineering at Shinshu University in 2001 and Ph.D. in 2009 at Tokyo Institute of Technology. Previously he worked at ENAX for four years and the Sony Corporation for three and a half years as a battery engineer.

Dr. Miller is President of JME, Inc., a consulting firm specializing in ultracapacitor development, testing, and application. John is a well-known expert in ultracapacitor technology with 25 years of experience in the industry. In the past five years, prior to joining the AABC team, he has chaired the Advanced Capacitor World Summit.

Kiyoto Otsuka graduated from the master course of Tokyo Institute of Thechnology in 1981 and joined KURARAY CO.,LTD. His special field of work is activated carbon. He is now the general manager of the Kuraray Chemical research and development center and the Kuraray battery material research center.

Mr. Imoto studied the graphite intercalation compound at Kyoto University and graduated in 1989. His career as an engineer of battery material started when he entered Sony Corporation and engaged in the first commercialization of Lithium Ion Battery to start up anode carbon material. He not only developed the anode carbon material but also the high capacity anode material, the functional separator and so on. He recently moved to Kureha Corporation where he is working on the non-graphitizable anode material, CARBOTRON®, and PVdF binder.

Dr. Peter Pichler has held several positions in Hybrid Electric Vehicle Development at MAGNA. Since 2005, he has lead several development and industrialization programs for Li-Ion electrical storage systems before becoming responsible for MAGNA’s battery-pack technologies.

Michael Everett has been the Chief Technical Officer for Maxwell Technologies Inc. since December, 2005 and is responsible for new energy storage technology development. The technology roadmap, identification of new technology approaches and feasibility demonstrations of that technology along with verification testing of new technologies are primary responsibilities of the CTO at Maxwell. Mike joined Maxwell in 2002 occupying various positions in product assurance and product development prior to becoming the CTO. During his time at the company Mike has introduced numerous products including the advancement of the ultracapacitor commercial technology into products that are in widespread demand today as well as developing and introducing the first commercialized standard ultracapacitor module line for the company. In addition to his CTO responsibilities Mike is the head of the Technical Pre-Sales group at Maxwell who interfaces directly with customers ranging from small non-public entities to large automotive OEMs, providing technical background, support and collaboration to enhance the utilization of the ultracapacitor technology.

Simona Vrabiescu has technical and business administration education to Engineering Master in Mechatronics and MBA level. She has international experience in various management positions in the field of energy distribution, transmission, transportation and aviation systems at AREVA, ALSTOM, ABB and Aerofina. She is a member of the Swiss Engineering Association and a fellow member of the British Chartered Institute of Marketing. Since 2011 Simona is in charge of the marketing activities at Maxwell Technologies for the EMEA region.

Masayoshi Takahashi graduated from the Electrical Engineering Department of Ehime University in 1980, and joined Mazda Motor Corporation (then Toyo Kogyo), to become part of the Vehicle Electronics Development Department. He became resident engineer in the USA in1993 and joined the R&D Business Planning Office in 1998, then the FSS Module Strategy Planning Office in 2000. In 2003 he moved to the Vehicle System Development Promotion Office and became part of the Vehicle System Technology Development Group in 2005. Since 2009 he has become part of the Vehicle System Development Department.

Prof. Winter’s main research interests are in applied electrochemistry, materials electrochemistry and inorganic chemistry and technology. He is the past president of the International Battery Materials Association (IBA), Past Chair of the Division of Electrochemical Energy Storage and Conversion of International Society of Electrochemistry (ISE), and Technical Editor of the Journal of The Electrochemical Society (ECS). Currently, he is the spokesperson of the LIB2015 Innovation Alliance of the BMBF (Germany Ministry of Education and Research) and a member of the German National Platform E-Mobility (NPE).

Rud Istvan is the principal of and inventor behind NanoCarbons LLC. Since 2005 he has also been Chairman and CEO of Third Stream Bioscience, Inc., a private corporation commercializing an antimicrobial licensed from P&G. He was previously a senior vice president at Motorola and a senior partner at BCG. He holds a BA summa cum laude from Harvard, a JD from Harvard Law School, and an MBA from Harvard Business School. He holds 12 issued and 13 pending US patents in four subject areas, and has authored the ebooks Gaia’s Limits and The Arts of Truth.

Dr. Nae-Lih Nick Wu received his PhD from Pennsylvania State University. He has served as the Director of Energy Research Center and Department Head at the National Taiwan University. His research activities focus on the synthesis of electrode and component materials for electrochemical devices, including supercapacitors and Li-ion batteries and on the development of advanced in-situ/in-operando analytic methodologies based on synchrotron facilities in charactering these materials and devices.

Mr. Yoshioka joined NEC Corporation in 1981 and started developing lithium-ion batteries at NEC central research laboratory in 1999. He then joined NEC Lamilion Energy, Ltd. in 2002 and worked on the development of lithium-ion batteries for automotive applications. In 2007 Mr. Yoshioka joined Automotive Energy Supply Corporation, the cell, battery module and pack supplier for Nissan and Renault EV, as executive vice president. In 2011, Mr. Yoshioka returned to NEC to head business development activities at NEC Energy Devices, Ltd., a producer of electrodes for Li ion cells.

Toshihiko Furukawa has an electrical engineering degree from Tokai University, Japan. His technical background includes over twenty years of experience in power electronics and high frequency amplifier development/design. Currently, he is focusing on DLCAP technical support and business development for the entire US market.

Prof. Kötz received his PhD in Physics from the TU Berlin. After postdoctoral years at the Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio and at the Fritz Haber Institut der Max Planck Gesellschaft in Berlin, he joined the ABB Corporate Research Centre in Baden, Switzerland in 1982. Since 1989 he has been leading the capacitor and interface analysis group of the Electrochemistry Laboratory at Paul Scherrer Insitut (PSI) in Switzerland. Throughout his career his research continued to aim at the characterization of the solid electrolyte interphase, the understanding of electro-active materials and the extrapolation of electrochemical processes to application. Dr. Kötz publshed more than 200 papers in peer-reviewed scientific journals and serves as associated editor for Electrochimica Acta.

Dr. Elzbieta Frackowiak is full professor in the Institute of Chemistry and Technical Electrochemistry at Poznan University of Technology, Poland. She is Chair of Division 3 “Electrochemical Energy Conversion and Storage” of the International Society of Electrochemistry (2009-2014), winner of the Foundation for Polish Science Prize (December 2011), and corresponding Member of the Polish Academy of Sciences. She is the author of over 150 publications. Her mains research topics are: energy storage in electrochemical capacitors, Li-ion batteries, hydrogen electrosorption using various electrode materials (nanoporous carbons, template carbons, carbon nanotubes, graphene, conducting polymers, doped carbons and transition metal oxides); new concepts of supercapacitors based on the carbon/redox couples interface.

François Béguin is Professor in Poznan University of Technology (Poland), where he has been recently awarded the WELCOME stipend from the Foundation for Polish Science. His research activities are devoted to the development of nanocarbons with controlled porosity and surface functionality for applications to lithium batteries, supercapacitors, electrochemical hydrogen storage, reversible electrosorption of water contaminants. He is member of the International Advisory Board of the Carbon Conferences and he launched the international conferences on Carbon for Energy Storage and Environment Protection (CESEP). He is member of the editorial board of the journal Carbon. Until 2012, he was Professor of materials science in Orléans University (France) and Director of national programmes on Energy Storage (Stock-E), Hydrogen and Fuel Cells (H-PAC) and electricity management (PROGELEC) in the French Agency for Research (ANR).

Ohata Tsumoru developed magnetic tape for recording as an Engineer at Sony Corporation for 17 years. He then worked as an Engineering Manager on the development of lithium-ion batteries for 17 years at Panasonic Corporation, his greatest success being the invention of a ceramic safety layer for electrodes. In 2004, Mr. Ohata joined PRIMIX and developed a continuous electrode mixing process.

Xiaoyu ZHANG earned his double Bachelors in Material Chemistry, International Economics and Commerce from Nankai University, Tianjin PRC, in 2005. He obtained the double PhDs from Pierre and Marie Curie University and Peking University on lithium-ion battery materials in 2010. He joined the European research center of Saint-Gobain as R&D engineer from 2010 to 2012. Currently he is an analyst in RealLi Research and manages the oversea business, focusing on the global intelligence on lithium-ion batteries value chain.

After he graduated from the University of Tokyo in 1989, Mr. Origuchi started his engineering carrier in the vehicle research laboratory of Nissan Motor Co., Ltd., where he was in charge of developing Nissan FEV presented in 1991. He continued to develop Altra EV and Tino HEV in Nissan taking a part of developing the world first Li-ion batteries for automotive applications until his resignation from Nissan at the end of 2000. Since 2002 he has been working for Renault in France always in charge of advanced battery development. He is now responsible for Renault’s EV battery development group.

Dr. Philippe Blanchard received his PhD in Electrochemistry in 1984 (Research area for PhD: corrosion of construction steel in sea water). Dr. Blanchard joined Saft in 1985. He has taken the following positions: Research engineer in the area of Ni-Cd batteries, Research Group Leader for Ni-MH batteries, Cell Engineering Manager for industrial li-ion cells. He has been the program manager for several USABC and European programs. He joined the JV with Johnson Controls in 2006 with HEV cell design responsibility. Since 2011 and the termination of the JV, he still keeps the same responsibility within the SAFT Automotive Battery Group.

Michael Lippert is Marketing and Business Development Manager for Saft’s Energy storage Business Unit. He is holding a degree in European Business Studies in France and Germany and has been working over the past 20 years in different international sales and marketing positions at Saft for Railway, Traction and Stationary markets. His current responsibilities cover strategic and operational marketing for Industrial Battery Markets, in particular market and product development for Renewable Energies and Smart Grids.

Dr. Kiho Kim earned his Ph. D. in electrochemistry from Seoul National University ( in Korea ) in 1991. He joined Samsung in 1991 and since then has been developing NiMH, Li-Ion & polymer batteries for consumer and automotive applications for 17 years. From 2008 to 2012 , he worked for SB Limotive, (joint company of Samsung and Bosch) as a leader of HEV, PHEV & EV Li-Ion cell development. Currently, he is working for Samsung SDI, Automotive Battery System Business unit as a leader of HEV, PHEV & EV Li ion cell development.

Dr. Ivano Galbiati studied Chemistry at the University of Milano gaining a Masters degree in 2007. In 2010 he earned his Doctoral Degree in Chemical Sciences/Electrochemistry at the University of Milano with a dissertation on “Synthesis and characterization of nitrogen doped carbon catalysts for electrochemical oxygen reduction reaction”. In 2011 he joined SGL in the Lithium Ion Battery group. He is in charge of a close R&D cooperation with the worldwide leading anode manufacturer. He is also involved in public funded R&D projects in the field of energy systems with universities, institutes and companies.

Dr. Charles Gibson is a founder of Shamrock Energy Corp., and currently serves as the company’s CTO. His current research activities include the development of novel inorganic/polymer composite separators and improved electrodes for use in EDLCs and batteries. Prior to founding Shamrock Energy, Dr. Gibson served as University Research Professor at the University of Wisconsin – Oshkosh, where his research focused on development nanomaterials for energy saving devices. Dr. Gibson received his Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin – Madison, and postdoctoral training at AT&T Bell Laboratories.

Tetsuro Okoshi studied at Tohoku University (1993) in the Department of Applied Chemistry. In 2010 he became deputy general manager at the Advanced Battery Development Center of Shin-Kobe Electric Machinery Co., Ltd. In 2011 he became general manager of the Battery Development & Design Department at Shin-Kobe Electric Machinery Co., Ltd.

Dr. Meinert graduated in electrical engineering, Electrical Railway Systems, from Dresden University of Technology, Germany in 1995 and received his doctorate in electrical engineering from Darmstadt University of Technology, Germany in 2007. His employment experience included the Siemens AG, Erlangen since 1995 in the field of Rolling Stock and Railway Power Supply as well as the Darmstadt University of Technology from 2001 to 2004. He is currently the Head of the R&D-group for energy storage units/systems as well as overhead contact line free systems at the Siemens AG, Infrastructure & Cities Sector. His special experience include railway systems, High Temperature Superconductivity and innovative energy systems.

Dr. Birke has more than 19 years experience in research, development and production of energy storage systems with a strong focus on Li-Ion technology. He received his Phd in materials science 1997 from University of Kiel. 1998 he joined Fraunhofer-Institute for Silicon Technology, Itzehoe, Germany, leading the development of a proprietary Li-Ion laminated cell with a functional ceramic separator. He was co-founder of two spin offs to put this technology into production. In 2000 he moved to VARTA, Ellwangen, Germany, where he was responsible for development and production of pouch type laminated Li-Ion cells, PoLiFlex. In 2005 he joined Continental AG, Berlin, Germany, where he held different functions in the Business Unit Hybrid Elecetric Vehicle. Since 2013 he is Head of Advanced Cell & Battery Technology in SK Continental E-motion, a JV between SK Innovation and Continental.

Holger Lüdtke has more than 14 years of experience in research, development and production of automotive electric drive and battery systems with a strong focus on xEV applications. In 1999 he started at Daimler Research Center, Frankfurt, Germany, developing the 42V power net based high-dynamic electric drive system for vehicle active body control applications. In 2001 he joined Continental AG, Germany, working in different sites and projects dealing with advanced electric drive systems for high power actuators and mild-hybrid systems based on 42V power net. Since 2005 he held different functions in the Business Unit Hybrid Electric Vehicle in Berlin concentrating on HV xEV systems. In 2010 he became Head of Development for Li-Ion Battery Systems. Since January 2013 he is Chief Technology Officer and Vice President in SK Continental E-motion, the newly formed Joint Venture between SK Innovation and Continental.

Bob Shoemaker is the Systems Engineering Manager for Electric Transportation - Battery Management Systems with Texas Instruments, Inc. He is an active SAE and IEEE member and has served on Technical Committee’s for Li-ion battery safety, and is currently a member of the ISO26262 US-TAG. His primary responsibilities at TI include systems and IC design for the automotive and electric transportation Battery Management space, as well as Business Development, Marketing, and Key Customer interface. He has 30 years experience in designing, developing and managing complex electronic products for a variety of businesses with more than 4 years of direct experience with Li-ion IC Battery Management Solutions.

Dr. Michael Kruft received his PhD in Electrochemistry and Surface Science in 1997 from the University of Bonn, Germany. He has more than 15 years of global experience in the rechargeable battery industry with the Toda Group of Companies and the H.C. Starck Group. With positions in battery materials research & development, sales & marketing as well as manufacturing and senior management, he assumed responsibility for application labs, pilot plants, plants and large investment projects (e.g. USD 70 Million DOE funded cathode material plant) in Germany, Japan, Canada and the USA. Since the beginning of 2009, he is President and Managing Director of Toda Kogyo Europe, the European subsidiary of the Toda Group.

Dr. Naoi is a professor of chemistry at the Institute of Symbiotic Science & Technology at Tokyo University of Agriculture & Technology (TAT). He also serves as a CTO of K&W Inc., a TAT venture company dealing with “Energy Solutions for the Future.” With a Ph.D. from Waseda University, Tokyo, his research interests are advanced supercapacitors, future nanobatteries, and energy, environmental, and materials science.

Keita Hashimoto graduated in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, in March March 2002 from the Tokyo Institute of Technology Graduate School. He joined Hitachi, Ltd. In April 2002 and Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) in January 2006. He is in charge of PHEV development.

Engineer in Electrochemistry with Ph.D. in Solid State Chemistry from Bordeaux University on Li-ion cathode materials (2001). Joined Umicore Corporate R&D in 2002 as R&D Project Manager on battery materials. Moved to Rechargeable Battery Materials division in 2006 as Product Development Manager for automotive programs. Now in charge of Business Venturing. Since 2012, also Chief Technology Officer of beLife (JV with Prayon on phosphate based materials).

Prof. Patrice Simon is Professor of Material Science at the Université Paul Sabatier. His research is focused on the characterization of nanostructured materials for electrochemical energy storage sources, including electrochemical capacitors and Li-ion batteries. In 2012, Patrice Simon obtained an Advanced Grant from the European Research Council (Ionaces project) to work on microporous carbons for supercapacitor applications. He holds the Chair of Excellence from the EADS company “Nanomaterials for embedded energy storage sources”.

Thierry Brousse is a Professor of Materials Science at the University of Nantes. He received his engineer degree in 1987 and his PhD degree in 1991. After, few years as an analytical chemistry engineer, he joined the University of Nantes in 1994 and get a Full Professor position in 2005. He is a researcher at Institut des Matériaux Jean Rouxel (IMN). His research focuses on materials for electrochemical energy storage with particular emphasis on alternative materials for Li-ion batteries and innovative and/or modified inorganic materials for electrochemical capacitors. He is Associate Editor for Journal of The Electrochemical Society and ECS Electrochemistry Letters. Since 2010 he is President of the Evaluation committee for the call for proposal on Energy storage (PROGELEC) of the French National Research Agency (ANR).

Stefano Passerini is Professor at the Institute of Physical Chemistry and co-founder of the MEET battery research centre at the University of Muenster (Germany). His research activities are focused on electrochemical energy storage in batteries and supercapacitors. Co-author of more than 200 scientific papers, a few book chapters and several international patents, has been awarded in 2012 the Research Award of the Electrochemical Society Battery Division. Since 2013 he has been appointed has European Editor of Journal of Power Sources.

Since 2010 Mr. Keller has been leading the energy-storage development group at Volkswagen AG. Between 2005 and 2010 he led the Battery Systems development department at Continental Temic, receiving the “Ferdinand Porsche” Prize in Mary 2009 in recognition of the development of the first application of a lithium-ion battery to high-volume vehicle. Mr. Keller studied Electrical Engineering (Automation) in Karlsruhe, Germany. He started his professional career in 1996 as a Development Engineer at a German industry supplier for power electronics and electric motor products before moving to the hybrid system group of Continental Temic.

Dr. Steven Kaye is the Chief Scientific Officer of Wildcat Discovery Technologies, a materials discovery company focused on battery materials and other clean energy applications. Dr. Kaye joined Wildcat in 2007 after completing his Ph.D. in inorganic chemistry at the University of California, Berkeley under the supervision of Professor Jeffrey R. Long. His research focused on the design and synthesis of new microporous coordination solids for applications in gas storage, gas separation and as microporous magnets. Upon joining Wildcat, Dr. Kaye played a key role in the development of Wildcat’s proprietary high throughput battery and gas separation workflows including unique electrochemical and sorption instruments, mills, and formulation processes. Using Wildcat’s unique high throughput materials discovery workflow, Dr. Kaye has led Wildcat’s research team to the discovery of numerous battery materials, including a novel cathode (CM1) and electrolyte additives (EM1) to enable 5V cells as well as improved low temperature coatings and electrolyte additives for fluoride-based cathodes.

Sachiya Inagaki, born in Tokyo, Japan, has worked with Yano Research Institute since August 2000, when he joined the CMEO (Chemical Materials and Electronics & Optics) department as market researcher. Recently, Mr. Inagaki’s work has focused primarily on market research for LiB cells and four major LIB components (cathode, anode, electrolyte, and separator). His geographic scope of research is not limited to Japan, Korea, and China, but also includes the U.S and Europe where new LiB markets have been emerging. He has travelled to many different countries and regions around the world to conduct interviews with key persons in the industries and to carry out any other types of on-site surveys. Since August 2011, he has been in a position of general manager of Seoul branch office.

Dr. Yurii Maletin, is a Chief Scientist and co-founder of YUNASKO. After graduating from Moscow State University Dr. Maletin got the PhD degree from the Academy of Science of Ukraine in 1977 and the DSc degree from the Institute of Chemical Physics of Russian Academy of Science in 1989. Dr. Maletin has been doing research in the field of supercapacitors for 24 years, successfully leading the team of researchers. He is a frequent speaker at major international supercapacitor conferences. He has more than 70 scientific papers and more than 20 patents.

Dr. Kai Kremer studied chemistry at Aachen University of Technology (RWTH Aachen), specializing in macromolecular chemistry, obtaining the academic degree of a Diplom-Chemiker. He obtained his PhD in 2002 under the supervision of Prof. Dr. B. Blümich, chair of macromolecular chemistry, with the thesis title: “Investigation of quality control of rubber and plastics with unilateral NMR”. In 2006 he became Sales Manager at Zeon Europe GmbH, Düsseldorf of elastomers & special polymers. In 2012 he became the Technical Service (elastomers) & Automotive Marketing Representative at Zeon Europe GmbH, Düsseldorf, Marketing of battery materials.
